Part I. Listening Comprehension
Section
A
Directions: In this section you will hear ten
short conversations. At the end of each conversation, a question
will be asked about what was said. Both the conversation and the
question will be spoken twice. After each conversation, there will
be a pause. During the pause, you should read the four choices
marked A, B, C and D, and decide on the best answer. Then mark the
corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through
the center.
1.
M: How about
going to the movies tonight, Jane?
W:
I’m sorry, John. I can’t. My mother is going to New York to
visit my sister, and I have to drive her to the station. How about
some other time, John?
Q:
Where will Jane go this evening?
2.
W: When will my car be
fixed?
M: Well, it’s
noon by my watch. I think I can have it done in a couple of
hours.
Q: When can the
woman get her car?
3.
M: I wish I hadn’t thrown
away that list of books.
W: I thought you
might. So I took it from the waste paper basket. Here it
is.
Q: What do we
learn about the list?
4.
W: Mary complains that she
never gets any mail.
M: That’s too
bad. I’ll write her right away.
Q: What would
Mary like to receive?
5.
M: Can you
lend me ten dollars ?
W:
I just spent my last dollars for groceries. I wish you had asked an
hour ago.
Q:
Where has the woman just been?
6.
W: Where does
Jim come from?
M:
He was born in Hong Kong and grew up in America, but now he is a
Canadian citizen.
Q:
Where does Jim presently live?
7.
W: John, will
you turn off TV and do me a favor? I’m running out of
salt.
M:
OK, I’ll be back in a minute.
Q:
What is John going to do?
8.
W: I hope I
can find my passport somewhere in the hotel.
M;
Look in your suitcase again, you couldn’t have forgotten
that.
Q:
What is the woman looking for?
9.
M: The train
leaves at half past eight.
W:
Oh, God. The bus hasn’t come yet. We’d better take a taxi. Otherwise
40 minutes doesn’t give us enough time even to reach the
station.
Q: At what time
did the conversation take place?
10.
W: Have you
found anything wrong with my stomach?
M:
Not yet. I’m still examining. I’ll let you know the result next
week.
Q:
What is the probable relationship between the man and the
woman?
Section
B
Directions: In
this section you will hear a conversation. The conversation will be
spoken twice. There are five questions about the conversation. For
each question there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Decide on
the best answer and then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer
Sheet with a single line through the center.
Waitress:Good evening sir,
madam. A table for two?
Man: No, thank you. But can you
do me a favor?
Waitress: Sure. What can I
do for you?
Man: We’re looking for a motel.
Are there any motels nearby?
Waitress: Yes,
there is one. It is quiet and comfortable and the price is
reasonable as well.
Man: Is it far from
here?
Waitress: No, it
is not far from here. It is next to a small post
office.
Man: It sounds good. How long
does it take us to get there by car?
Waitress : It
only takes you about ten minutes.
Man: How can we get
there?
Waitress: Drive
straight for about five or six minutes and turn right, then you’ll
see it.
Man: That’s very nice. Thank you
very much for your help.
Waitress:That’s all
right.
Section
C
Directions: In this section you will hear a
passage. The passage will be read twice. There are five questions
about the passage. For each question there are four choices marked
A, B, C and D. Decide on the best answer and then mark the
corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through
the center.
Now I’d like
to talk to you about the final exam. The exam will be held next
Thursday, the last day of the exam week. Remember to bring along two
or three pens in case you run out of ink. Unlike the midterm, this
test will not include multiple choice questions. It will consist
entirely of essays.
You will have
to answer three of the five essay questions. The exam will be
comprehensive, which means you will be tested on all the subjects
we’ve covered in class. I would suggest you review your midterms as
well as the textbook and your class notes. The final will account
for 50% of your grade in the course, the research project will
account for 20%, and the midterm 30%. I’ll be in my office almost
all day on Tuesday next week. If you run into any problems, please
don’t hesitate to ask me questions.
Good luck
with your study, and I’ll see you on Tuesday.
